Hillsborough Presbyterian Church NJ Seeking Transitional Pastor

We are a small church community with Presbyterian roots looking to embrace a progressive focus. We intend to orient the core of our mission around: respect for and openness to learning about and from other backgrounds and faith traditions and respect for and inclusion into our faith community of all people who are honest seekers desiring to be a part of a community that orients its life and action around the path and teachings of Jesus.

Our church, The Hillsborough Presbyterian Church in Hillsborough, New Jersey, USA, is seeking a part-time transitional pastor to help discover God’s plan for our worship family. The vacancy is due to the resignation of our pastor of thirteen years. The ideal candidate will assist us in our transition toward finding a permanent pastor. We have committed leadership who has already begun working towards redevelopment of the church. Redevelopment plans are directed towards outreach in the areas of community support groups, a community garden, and providing a welcoming spiritual community for LGBT persons and for seekers and doubters to explore belief and spirituality in the context of 21st century realities. We are also investigating offering alternative worship experiences such as Taize prayer.

We are seeking a charismatic leader who can inspire, energize, motivate and lead a congregation through such a transformation. We are especially interested in individuals with experience in and/or passion for crafting of alternative worship experiences, challenging traditions, listening for and interpreting God’s voice in today’s world, openness to dialogue with other faiths, fostering a “welcoming and affirming” congregation environment and embracing the diversity of human experience and justice. The candidate should also have energy and a willingness to revitalize God’s spirit within the congregation. The candidate must have a Masters of Divinity. Being an ordained pastor or certified candidate in The Reformed Church in America, Presbyterian Church USA, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, United Church of Christ, United Methodist Church, or Episcopal Church in the USA is desirable.

The Transitional Pastor will be responsible for:
1. Worship and Pastoral Care
• Prepare and lead Sunday morning worship including sermons, sacraments and occasional children’s time within the service.
• Prepare and lead worship for special services such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Palm Sunday, Easter, World Wide Communion Sunday and Christmas Services.
• Perform service for weddings and funerals
• Visit the sick and homebound and provide pastoral care to members of the congregation as requested and in conjunction with the Deacons.
2. Church Leadership
• Moderate Session
• Advisor to the Board of Deacons
• Use skills and contacts to facilitate HPC’s exploration of, education in, and implementation of Progressive Christian tenets
• Model and encourage personal spiritual development

HPC acknowledges that the responsibilities as outlined above may go beyond the hours of a part time pastor and is open to non-traditional and flexible approaches to how the needs of the congregation and the leadership are met by the pastor. The pastor and leadership may elect to bring in other facilitators and educators to guide HPC through this redevelopment process and may elect to partner the transitional pastor with a student intern. Lay leadership commits to staying active in the redevelopment process that they have begun. The pastor will act as advisor and facilitator for the ongoing congregation leadership.

To apply please send the following to info@hpcnj.net: a cover letter, resume, 3 references, and a 1 page reflection on why your talents, skills, and spirit make you an ideal candidate for this position.
