The Blessings of Aging with Joan Chittister is a one-month e-course designed for elders and those who love them. Joan Chittister reframes aging and encourages us to discover through reflection and practice what new perceptions and attitudes about growing older can mean for our lives. She will explore such themes as regret, fear, the quest for meaning, the joys of this time of life, spirituality, wisdom, and legacy. Participants receive emails three times a week, video messages from Chittister, practice suggestions, and access to an online Practice Circle. Aging is a great adventure, an opportunity to deepen and enrich our spirituality. In this e-course in Spirituality & Practice’s Elder Spirituality Project, Joan Chittister discovers blessings behind every aspect of growing older. There is a difference, she notes, between age, aging, aged, ag’ed, and ripened. Through this month-long program, she reframes aging and encourages us to discover through reflection and practice what new perceptions and attitudes about growing older can mean for our own lives.

joan chittisterJoan Chittister, now in her 70s, has been a Benedictine nun for 50 years and is the founder of Benetvision: A Resource and Research Center for Contemporary Spirituality. One of their projects was the basis of the S&P retreat Creating a Monastery of the Heart; this monastic movement now involves 7,500 seekers from around the world. Profiled as one of S&P’s Living Spiritual Teachers, Chittister is the author of 40 books, including The Gift of Years: Growing Older Gracefully. For this online retreat, themes she introduced in that book become the launchpads for further reflections by Chittister and discussion by e-course participants in the Practice Circle.

Universal themes to be explored include:

• common challenges such as regret and fear;

• the quest for meaning as the passageway from doing to being;

• time as the crucible of maturity and the advantages of having a beginner’s mind;

• the joys of appreciation, understanding, and choices;

• the satisfaction and serenity of tasting the spiritual dimensions of life;

• spirituality, wisdom, and legacy

“The Blessings of Aging with Joan Chittister” will run from October 7 – November 1. Participants will receive:

• 12 emails delivered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

• Video messages from Joan Chittister on Mondays and Wednesdays exploring the themes of the e-course.

• Spiritual practices, journal prompts, and creative exercises to ground the teachings in an elder’s everyday life.

• Access to an online Practice Circle (a forum open 24/7) for conversations with other elders from around the world.

This is a glorious spiritual workshop for elders who are ready to complete in themselves all that has been neglected and postponed when they were younger — and it is for anyone of any age who is ready to embrace a vision of elderhood as a blessed time to be fully alive. We Listen to Our Elders

Last spring we offered two e-courses as part of our Elder Spirituality Project: “ Becoming a Wise Elder with Angeles Arrien” and “ The Sage’s Tao Te Ching with William Martin.” On the evaluations for those courses, we asked the participants to tell us other subjects of interest to them to help us plan new e-courses. The first two choices (by wide margins) were:

1. Positive Attitudes, Recognizing the Gifts of Aging

2. Life Review, Harvesting Your Memories

We heard you! We are pleased to announce two new e-courses for October and November addressing those two themes.
