About the Author

Rev. Dr. Gary Wilburn was the Senior Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, Connecticut, from 1995 to 2007, when he was diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig s Disease. Prior to that he was the interim Senior Minister of the First Presbyterian of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, Connecticut, after serving the historic Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, California. Recipient of the Clergy of the Year Award by the Interfaith Council of Southwestern Connecticut, he was instrumental in bringing together for the first time Islamic, Jewish, and Christian leaders to address regional and national issues of peace and justice. He helped initiate research on these issues at Yale Divinity School s Center for Faith and Culture as One Word for One World. After his diagnosis, Gary moved with his wife Bev to Playa La Mision, Baja California, to write and surf the beach he so dearly loved in his power chair, celebrating each day and valuing each moment. There he became pastor in residence to the community conducting Easter and Christmas services and weekly Sundays with Gary discussions about faith and life, as well weddings, funerals, and clergy ordinations. He proudly served as a national spokesperson for ALS Stem Cell Research until his death in June, 2010.
