    Healing the Sexually Abused Heart:

A Workbook for Survivors, Thrivers and Supporters

    By: Dr. Jaime J. Romo

Healing the Sexually abused heart is a book with the potential to radically transform lives.  It’s purpose is to offer a map related to uncharted territory: healing hearts from religious authority child sexual abuse.  It is thoughtfully and sensitively written, but it does not back down from the hard facts, and lovingly leaves no room for excuses.

Dr. Romo deals head-on with the helplessness, or voicelessness that victims of Religious Authority sexual abuse (RASA) often feel, and then he makes the gentle observation that “there’s no way to solve a problem related to (our) victimhood with the same understanding of ourselves as victims.”  The goal, in Dr. Romo’s mind, is growth and transformation.  Drawing from his own life and experiences, Dr. Romo gently draws us on a journey toward spiritual wholeness.  Moving from a place of hurt and anger, projecting and denial, victims of this type of abuse can and must choose to change their relationship with their past so that they can change their present and their future.

I was especially impressed by the thoroughness with which this topic was addressed.  The workbook was written for people at every stage of the healing process, from those just starting out to those who have been on this journey of transformation for a while.  He encourages people to start at the beginning and be gentle with themselves.  There is also an entire section dedicated to those who are supporting a victim and who might not necessarily have experience with sexual abuse themselves.  Communities who have allowed this to happen in the past must learn and grow out of their comfortable ignorance and confront this head-on, deal with the implications, and commit to doing things differently in the future.

Dr. Romo’s dedication quotes from AW Tozer, “The whole church of God gains when the members that compose it begin to seek a better and higher life.”  This book begins that process of seeking a better and higher life for those affected by RASA.  It also educates individuals and communities so that this type of abuse will never happen again to an innocent child.
