Statement of Faith

We believe in God, a divine presence, gentle and loving, the ground of our being.

We believe in Jesus, who demonstrated to us the love of God, and who urged
his followers to express that love in their daily lives.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, as God’s continuing presence in our world,
surrounding us in compassionate love.

We believe in the church where people gather to learn about and praise God,
to share our concern for one another, and to bring justice and healing to
all of God’s Creation. Amen.

  1. When you use the term “GOD” you are using the name that has been used for thousands of years by people who knew nothing of science, evolution, the cosmos or even very much about life itself. And even if you describe God as “energy” and “ground of being,” humans can’t help giving this God personal qualities such as gentlenes and loving kindnes. Only when we understand that God, as understood in the past, has never existed in this supernatural way can we move forward into a future governed by what we know now of science, evolution and the whole of the universe. Therefore our new statements of faith and belief must stop using the old name for the reality of existence, “God,” in favor of something that might actually exist – the “Life Force of the Universe” that has and is creating all that we know and see in our world. Something that is no less real, but that has no human qualities or supernatural power. Not something that is just in us, but something that is us.
