Eden Seminary celebrates progressive Christian music with album release

Webster Groves, Mo. – Progressive Christian folk musician Christopher Grundy celebrated the release of his long-awaited new album, “Stepping In” with a release party on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. in the Schroer Commons on the campus of Eden Theological Seminary.

The album represents the best of Grundy’s writing for worship over the last 10 years. Songs in the collection have been sung at numerous regional and national gatherings of the United Church of Christ, as well as in local churches.

In 2007, he wrote “Listening Now” for the UCC’s fiftieth general synod, where a crowd of more than 10,000 sang it in worship. More recently, 10 of his songs were included in the songbook “Sing! Prayer and Praise.”

The celebration at Eden was not only for the new album, but for the alternative that Grundy’s music provides. To some listeners, the songs might sound the same as any contemporary Christian music, but the difference comes in the lyrics, which include themes of tolerance, social justice and openness to emerging Christian theologies. This is progressive Christian worship music, a genre that has struggled to gain recognition in a market dominated by more conservative music.

Grundy, who teaches worship and preaching at the seminary, has helped the genre gain traction around the country, banding together with like-minded artists. He has been instrumental in starting the Progressive Christian Artists Network (PCAN) and organizing events (called SHIFT gatherings) to bring more progressive Christian musicians together.
