About the Author: Michael Dowd

Rev. Michael Dowd is a bestselling evolutionary eco-theologian and pro-future evangelist whose work has been featured in The New York Times, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Newsweek, Discover, and on television nationally. His book, Thank God for Evolution: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World, was endorsed by 6 Nobel Prize-winning scientists, noted skeptics, and religious leaders across the spectrum. Michael and his science writer and evolutionary educator wife, Connie Barlow, have spoken to more than 2,200 groups throughout North America since April 2002. Michael has delivered two TEDx talks and a program at the United Nations. He has also conducted two acclaimed online conversation series: “The Advent of Evolutionary Christianity” and “The Future Is Calling Us to Greatness.” Dowd’s passion for proclaiming a pro-science message of inspiration — what he calls “the gospel of right relationship to reality” — has earned him the moniker ‘Rev. Reality’, as he speaks prophetically in secular and religious settings alike about our sacred responsibility to future generations. Videos of recent sermons can be found on his bio and publications page, as well as the “What’s New?” page on his and Connie’s main website: TheGreatStory.org

Description: Progress is the de facto religion in the industrial world. But something has changed in America, and beyond. What happens when we progressives ‘lose the faith’?

  • By Published On: October 30, 2017

We are living in a time of unprecedented evil, yet we don’t see it; we can’t see it. Not only has industrial civilization lost the ability to distinguish good and evil, we typically confuse the two and casually treat things that are downright anti-future as good.

Part 5 of 5 explores how a *factual* view of God and revelation, in light of the trajectory of Big History, clarifies our way into the future and restores the relevance (indeed, necessity!) of unflinchingly bold, science-based prophetic speech.

  • By Published On: July 28, 2014

Part 4 of 5 explores how and why Big History radically transforms our understanding (and experience!) of human nature, chaos, and death—including our relationship to ours and our loved one's foibles, problems, and mortality.

  • By Published On: July 28, 2014

Big History is humanity's first and only creation story derived from global collective learning. While secular, it nevertheless reveals a way of thinking and speaking about God(s) that is *undeniably* and *inescapably* real. Part 3 of 5 focuses on what and where God is in Big History and why it matters.

  • By Published On: July 28, 2014

Big History reveals the evolutionary (psychological and social) significance of religion and the religious (inspirational and revelatory) significance of science. Part 2 of 5 also explores how our sources of knowledge and wisdom have expanded through time.

  • By Published On: July 28, 2014

Big History *synthesizes* science and religion—head and heart—by transcending and including reason and faith, facts and values. Honoring both 'how things are' and 'which things matter' is essential for human survival. Part 1 explores what BH is, why it is important, and the significance of a global, evidential view of God & religion.

In our “adolescence” as a species (which was a threshold crossed as the modern era swept the globe), we began to question the beliefs, interpretations, and meanings we had inherited. The birth of this new form of collective intelligence, global collective intelligence, occurred when access to powerful new technologies (beginning with the telescope) ramped up our ability to discern how things are.

Biblical Christianity is bankrupt. I use ‘bankrupt’ in the exact sense of the term. A business that goes bankrupt still has value and is capable of producing useful goods or services. It still has an inventory and trained professionals in its employ. Until the day insolvency is declared, it also usually has a façade—a bright and upbeat demeanor by which its clients and the community at large assume it to be relatively healthy. The only thing wrong is that a bankrupt business is no longer able to accomplish its purpose: to be successful. It is precisely in this sense that I suggest Bible-centered faith is bankrupt.

The New Atheists are to be commended for demanding that humanity update our maps of reality and that we begin to value and actually use our modern and much enhanced capacities to discern right relationship and to devise age-appropriate ways for psychologically and materially moving in those directions. The New Atheists as God’s prophets: What a twist! How could we have arrived at such an absurd reversal of who speaks for God?
