My name is Brett Anthony and I am currently finishing up my Mdiv with a focus in pastoral care. I am also queer. Being queer in a space that is not traditionally accepting of queer folk can be an interesting experience, to say the least. When the intersection of ministry is added to the mix, it can get messy, even if the community is accepting!

Over the past few months a few friends and I have joined together to develope the Breathe Out experience. Breathe Out offers an immersive experience that helps LGBTQIA+ Pastors, Faith Leaders, and Seminary Students of all theological persuasions to Breathe Out, away from their ministerial contexts, whether that be a local church or educational institution, to rest, relax, and renew within an intimate community. We hope that by encouraging one another through vulnerable dialogue, service, and times of spiritual guidance with a Spiritual Director that our relationship with Christ, ourselves, one another, and our world are esteemed highly in and through love.

Pastors, Faith Leaders, & Seminary Students typically have retreats or yearly gatherings where they can come together to support one another and grow together amid their individual and communal challenges. However, LGBTQIA+ persons of faith are not always afforded this opportunity. Sometimes, making LGBTQIA+ persons of faith feel as if they are homeless even within their own faith. For those of us in ministry, it often feels as if the local context that we are serving has, in a sense, become our home. For some, the word home has positive connotations. For others, it has negative connotations. Breathe Out hopes to provide a third place away from that home. We aim to model an intimate and relational community that is representative of what we see in the relationship between Christ and the disciples, and yes, this includes women disciples as well. Breathe Out is an immersive retreat experience for LGBTQIA+ Pastors, Faith Leaders, & Seminary Students that aims to partner with the Church to build intentional rhythms of care for those who are serving us in the most vulnerable ways.
