From the Mystery Sprang Forth All Things
Tune: ABBOT’S LEIGH 87.87D
Cyril Vincent Taylor 1907-1991
EVERYTHING 87.87D
Melody: William L. Wallace
Harmony: Geri Zanon
- From the myst’ry sprang forth all things
Born of great creativeness,
An event of space-time birthing
Charged with God’s inclusiveness.
From that fire evolved the Cosmos
With its many shapes and forms.
From the clouds of gas came atoms
As a part of cosmic storms.
- Gravity birthed all the night sky,
Galaxies shaped each star’s course,
From gas spirals came the planets
Each with its intrinsic force.
From the water all Earth’s life came *
Colonizing sea and land,
Crawling, walking, swimming, flying
As if touched by artist’s hand.
- When Earth’s peoples joined the drama
We thought process myst’ry made
Was for us and not for others
Who with us form woven braid.
All our life is but a portion
Of the process whence we came.
In our death rejoining wholeness
We will share love’s cleansing flame.
- From the myst’ry sprang forth all things
And to myst’ry shall return.
For the myst’ry shares its wonder
In those ways we cannot earn.
We will rest in death’s enfolding
For we know all shall be well
As the changing cosmic cycles
Are dissolved in myst’ry’s spell.
*At the time of writing this text there was disagreement among Scientists whether life came from the sea or from vents in the Earth’s surface where water mixed with chemicals but one way or another life spread throughout the land.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
William (Bill) Livingstone Wallace is a retired New Zealand Methodist Minister and one of our most prolific contributors. Bill says that his work springs from communicating with the fire in his gut and his observation of both the internal and external aspects of the Cosmos. Since an early age, he has been both sympathetic to and critical of the church, announcing at the age of 13 his belief in evolution. In his youth, he struggled with the disconnection between art and spirituality in his own and other denominations and with the way in which all of the liturgies prior to the sermon were regarded as preliminaries and longer sermons were viewed as superior to more concise ones.
He holds a B.A. in philosophy and a Dip. Ed. and is the author of nine published collections of his hymns as well as other resources on our website. His aim is to help people be empowered by the divine within them and the Cosmos and to work to overthrow the forces of personal and institutional greed which destroy both the ecosystem and human society.
