  1. The tree of life’s a symbol

    For what each tree can be,

    It opens ways of thinking

    That set each person free.

    Some stand in isolation

    Yet jointly forests form.

    Aloneness in a tree’s life

    Can never be the norm.

  1. Our spirits may be single

    Yet longing to be one

    Within the sphere of wholeness

    Where oneness is the fun.

    Beyond our thoughts lie spaces

    Devoid of gate or wall,

    The space of myst’y’s dwelling

    Where large is very small.

  1. Through entering the silence

    We learn the ways to find

    Our breathing has a rhythm

    That goes with emptied mind.

    At times we will discover

    All bound’ries can dissolve

    Through oneness of encounter

    That helps our grace evolve.

  1. The way we each can let go

    Is what we all can find.

    Where walls have all now vanished

    There dwells the open mind.

    These moments of awareness

    Beyond what eye can see

    Are sequins in the darkness

    That set our spirits free.

  1. All these great primal moments

    Give access to a world

    Where wonder and God’s myst’ry

    In silence are unfurled.

    In quietude we find now

    The God of mystic truth,

    The God of walls dissolving,

    The God of ageless youth.

  1. We feel astride the mountain

    Alone yet not alone;

    There always is the Other

    The One whose touch we own.

    From mountain tops we climb down

    To broken lives below

    And with God’s peace bring healing

    Through ways that we now know.

  1. We can’t predict the timing

    When walls dissolve and flee

    But we can practice stillness

    Where praying longs to be.

    The birthing of awareness

    Is wak’ning that we seek;

    Experience that’s longed for

    By both the strong and weak.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
William (Bill) Livingstone Wallace is a retired New Zealand Methodist Minister and one of our most prolific contributors. Bill says that his work springs from communicating with the fire in his gut and his observation of both the internal and external aspects of the Cosmos. Since an early age, he has been both sympathetic to and critical of the church, announcing at the age of 13 his belief in evolution. In his youth, he struggled with the disconnection between art and spirituality in his own and other denominations and with the way in which all of the liturgies prior to the sermon were regarded as preliminaries and longer sermons were viewed as superior to more concise ones.
He holds a B.A. in philosophy and a Dip. Ed. and is the author of nine published collections of his hymns as well as other resources on our website. His aim is to help people be empowered by the divine within them and the Cosmos and to work to overthrow the forces of personal and institutional greed which destroy both the ecosystem and human society.
