- We all have need of stories that bind us into one,
We all have need of stories of life below the Sun,
We all have need of stories that shape the way we live,
We all have need of stories that mould the way we give.
- They are the common stories, the myths that we all share,
They are the common stories of water, fire and air,
They are the common stories of dying and of birth,
They are the common stories of all who live on Earth.
- The myths we hold in common should fit with science today,
Should shape our way of worship and help us as we pray,
Should form the sacred stories that people all can share,
Should shape our form of loving and aid the way we care.
- We all are made of atoms that from the Big Bang came, *
We all have need of Sun’s warmth from pulsing tongues of flame,
We all are those who found fire that helped us to evolve,
We all are Spirit’s partners whose fire makes hate dissolve.
- We all depend on water within our mother’s womb,
We all depend on water our bodies must consume,
We all depend on water to keep this Earth alive,
We all need sacred wellsprings to help our spirits thrive.
- We all rely on blood’s flow to keep our flesh alive,
We all rely on birth’s blood that lets our body thrive.
The flesh of other life forms helps us to be well fed,
Their sacrificial giving becomes our spirit’s bread.
- We all are part of Life’s Tree, that sacred living sign,
The many forms of being of cosmic bread and wine.
It is the intertwining that helps our spirit grow,
It is the Summer flowering that gives us seeds to sow.
- We all have need of myst’ry, life’s deepening purple shades,
We all have need of myst’ry to face what fear evades.
We all have need of myst’ry to go where reason fails,
We all have need of myst’ry to fill our spirit’s sails.
- It is the common story, the myth that we all share,
It is the common story of water, fire and air.
It is the common story of life upon this Earth,
It is the common story of dying and of birth.

*The Big Bang theory describes how the universe expanded from an initial state of high density and temperature to the form that it has today.
It took 380,000 years for electrons to be trapped in orbits around
Nuclei forming the first atoms.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
William (Bill) Livingstone Wallace is a retired New Zealand Methodist Minister and one of our most prolific contributors. Bill says that his work springs from communicating with the fire in his gut and his observation of both the internal and external aspects of the Cosmos. Since an early age, he has been both sympathetic to and critical of the church, announcing at the age of 13 his belief in evolution. In his youth, he struggled with the disconnection between art and spirituality in his own and other denominations and with the way in which all of the liturgies prior to the sermon were regarded as preliminaries and longer sermons were viewed as superior to more concise ones.
He holds a B.A. in philosophy and a Dip. Ed. and is the author of nine published collections of his hymns as well as other resources on our website. His aim is to help people be empowered by the divine within them and the Cosmos and to work to overthrow the forces of personal and institutional greed which destroy both the ecosystem and human society.
