Prior to that he was the interim Senior Minister of the First Presbyterian of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, Connecticut, after serving the historic Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, California. After his diagnosis, Gary moved with his wife Bev to Playa La Mision, Baja California, to write and surf the beach he so dearly loved in his power chair, celebrating each day and valuing each moment. There he became pastor in residence to the community conducting Easter and Christmas services and weekly Sundays with Gary discussions about faith and life, as well weddings, funerals, and clergy ordinations. He proudly served as a national spokesperson for ALS Stem Cell Research until his death in June, 2010.
