Getting Started Suggested Reading List

We are often asked for a reading list by those who want to learn more about progressive Christianity. Below are some suggestions to get you, or someone you know, started:

A good place to start is a book by Paul Alan Laughlin with Glenna S. Jackson, Remedial Christianity: What Every Believer Should Know About the Faith but Probably Doesn’t (Polebridge Press) Although this book is ten years old, it is still one of the best books on raising the important questions about Christianity.

Other Book suggestions:

The Bible
Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, John Shelby Spong
Who Wrote the Bible, Richard Elliott Freidman (this is primarily about the Hebrew Scriptures but the book demonstrates how the Bible was changed over the centuries)
Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why, Bart Ehrman (2005)

Jesus
The Historical Jesus for Beginners, William M. Linden (2008)
Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, Marcus Borg
Jesus a Revolutionary Biography, John Dominic Crossan

God
A History of God, Karen Armstrong
God: The Evidence: The Reconciliation of Faith and Reason in a Postsecular World, Patrick Glynn (1997)
