New Music for Progressive Christianity – “Ocean”

New Music

for Progressive Christianity

by Keith Sanford, Ph.D.

“Ocean” is a song of finding comfort in divine presence, yet still embracing some anxiety.

A high-quality song download is FREE to the first 200 people.

What does it mean to find comfort in divine presence, and if we find this comfort, why would we still embrace anxiety? To answer these questions, we need to consider two types of comfort that people might seek or receive from God: power comfort and presence comfort. To read about these types of comfort and hear the new song, go to www.ForwardFaith.org/ocean.

As the world faces a pandemic and other crises, it is valuable to consider the types of comfort we seek from God. The new song draws images from a majestic ocean landscape and from the first chapter of Genesis to describe a unique type of comfort that is relevant, authentic, and meaningful.

Another song relevant for the current point in time is, “Red Lines,” a song about racism and the history of redlining. To hear the song and to read about types of racism and the history of the racist practice of redlining in the United States, go to www.ForwardFaith.org/red-lines.

While listening to Ocean and Red Lines, you can access a wealth of free resources:
* Read the commentary about the difference between power comfort and presence comfort.
* Read the commentary about racism and redlining.
* Use the provided lyrics (or the lead sheets if you are a musician) and sing along.
* If you are a religious leader looking for material to use or distribute, you are welcome to use Ocean or any other free resources at ForwardFaith.org.
