Pastor Tony Minear’s Sermon: Do You See This Woman?

“Do You See This Woman?” Jesus poses this very question to Simon, a Pharisee, over a casual meal as found in our gospel reading from today, Luke 7:36-47. On the surface this question about the woman who washes Jesus’ feet with perfume is rather unassuming and inconspicuous, in line more with a survey of one’s visual acuity than anything particularly thoughtful. However, when you step back and examine it through a different lens, a lens of principle and conviction, it becomes a more poignant and pointed question. In our new summer worship series, “Just Askin’ – The Questions Jesus Asked Tell Us About Him and Ourselves,” we examine Jesus’ rather infrequent yet affecting questions. Join Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. as he unpacks Jesus’ question to Simon in light of today’s religious and secular worldviews. Discover how religion has played a bigger role than you might think in diminishing the importance of women throughout the centuries. See how the fallout of this marginalization has shaped society’s biases, and how you can tangibly respond with the light and compassion of Jesus to nullify inequality not just with women, but with every person dismissed and demoted because of those biases.
