Personal Faith and Public Policy

Archibald MacLeish wrote, “Religion is at its best when it makes us ask hard questions of ourselves. It is at its worst when it deludes us into thinking we have all the answers for everybody else.” We progressives generally agree with allowing faith to be personal and resist making any one religion’s beliefs a matter of public policy. However, we have to admit that we also try to change public policy when we advocate for universal health care, equal human rights, and laws protecting our environment and even limiting predatory lending. In the end we must accept that while we want to be tolerant of others’ beliefs but we must not be tolerant of intolerance. We unapologetically advocate for healthy spirituality and are opposed to unhealthy spirituality. Religious belief is not an excuse for prejudice or injustice.
