The Integrity of Nonviolence

Nonviolence needs to be the means as well as the end to which we advocate and bear witness. When we resort to the means of our enemies, we empower and multiply their ideology. We must liberate ourselves of violent responses before we can liberate our opponents from them. And we must sacrifice ourselves, if need be, in order to advance the principles and ethic for which we stand. The values we strive for and live by must be the values by which we are willing to die. We chaplain by example — reminding the violent among us that no ideology or rightness of thought is worthy of giving up our soul and character by employing methods that create more victimization.
