Lent, Week 2

Of all the symbols we encounter during Lent, none is more recognizable than the cross.  Even as it is claimed by all Christians, the meanings that are attached to it are many.  For some, it means salvation; for others, the power of unconditional love; for still others, the meeting of the heavenly dimension (vertical) with the earthly (horizontal).  For Tillich, a symbol always “points beyond itself” to a mystery that cannot be fully explained.  What is the meaning of the cross to you, as a progressive Christian?
