Lesson 3 from Year One is about: THE STORIES OF OUR TRADITION: The Bible and How We Use It
The Bible is a wonderful book for many reasons, but one of the most important reasons is that it is a record of how a people who took their relationship with God very seriously evolved in their understanding of God, community, and each other.
Teaching children about the Bible can be challenging. On one hand, the Bible has been one of the most revered and influential documents in history, especially in the western hemisphere. On the other hand, over the last 150 years, scholars have demonstrated that this “holy book” is really not a book at all but a collection of little books. The word “bible” translates as “library” or “collection.” In most cases, these little books started off as an oral tradition, were eventually transcribed in ancient languages, and then were assembled and reassembled at different times over a period of many centuries. Furthermore, we have learned that certain books were used and certain books were eliminated based on the prevailing political ideologies of the time in order to create what we now call the Bible.
It is important for children to understand that these books are made up of stories and the people who were telling these stories lived in a very different world than our own. he stories, the rituals, and the laws were eventually written down over hundreds of years. Because there was more interchange with people from other lands, new ideas were introduced, and people’s understanding of God gradually changed. Plus, over the ages wise teachers grew out of their midst which resulted in new understanding of their relationship with God. One of those wise teachers was Jesus of Galilee.
