National holidays always give me pause. As a Christian, I’m never entirely sure how to engage patriotism. I’ve waved many a flag in my life, hung a few upside down, pretended to be Canadian to avoid the issue, shouted Frederick Douglass’ famous speech from the rooftops, and refrained from such celebrations altogether. July 4 is my day of national ambiguity.

Money isn’t divine. But there is something divine about maintaining trust and faith in each other. Children trusting their parents to take care of them – that is a sacred trust. The trust we put in each other in our churches is holy. And the institutions we create to enable our economy to run smoothly and predictably – that too necessitates a sacred trust.
Prophets like Isaiah are generally recognized as improving the religion of Israel by defining righteousness as ethical living more than observing temple rituals. Righteousness in the eyes of God became more than purity standards, for it required doing justice, speaking truthfully, and avoiding dishonesty and abuse in human relations.
We might be tempted to think that apocalypticism was limited to ancient peoples, but we would be wrong. Some of the most powerful people in the world are today envisioning the end time and are preparing accordingly.
We must reclaim it from the Christian right.
When one digs just beneath the surface of the Bible and engages its stories in their ancient culture and context, it becomes very clear the Bible is very queer.
