The Price of Defending Whiteness

Why is race still a thing in America? 150 years after the end of slavery, 50 years after the integration of public schools, a decade after the election of a black president, why is racism still such a powerful influence in our culture. Dying of Whiteness, a new book by Jonathan Metzl (sociology and psychiatry professor at Vanderbilt) documents how those who have the least will cling to a sense of superiority based on having been born white, even when their rejection of the expansion of Medicaid and even the liberalizing of gun laws, is shortening the lives of tens of thousands of mostly white men.
