Gospel Song
earthsized waves ring gospel truth
in measures long as swells of surf
wide as air among redwood trees
a word or tune will catch the beat
long enough to make us yearn
for the rest of the song of the universe
the space to the sun is a guitar string
struck to make our emptiness sing
of beginnings and ends and folds of time
layers of worlds we pass through blind
a fractal chord suggests the song
and even the earless sing along
we’re shown more truth than we can say
but we each have an instrument to play
noise of day adds up to a hum
night is the skin of a beaten drum
so deep we barely hear its din
keeping time for the gospel hymn
