As Christianity continues in search of a reformation adequate to our modern experience, it is amazing–through it all–how we continue to be fascinated by Jesus.  Indeed, it is hard not to be.  The life he lived, overflowing with compassion and courage, continues to draw us in.  Who was he, what was he about, and what commitments does he call us to?  We want to know.

The first question to ask regarding Dr. Jeffrey Frantz’s new book, The Jesus You Didn’t Know You Could Believe In, is why another book on Jesus. Here’s why: Dr. Frantz, a pastor for forty years, believes the Christian faith must grow, evolve toward new understandings of its central doctrines, or it will die. With this in mind, he creates a Jesus adequate to our modern experience. This Jesus is fully human-a man whose life overflowed with love and compassion, courage, charisma, and a keen intelligence.

Frantz posits that the resurrection makes no sense unless we see Jesus as fully human. His argument is quite an achievement. Frantz writes as a pastor rather than a scholar which makes the book more readable, but don’t be fooled. The book is filled with original insights. The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Frantz is a retired United Church of Christ minister.  He had long-term pastorates in San Diego County and in Miami Lakes, Florida.  His service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Panama in the late sixties spurred his commitment to social justice ministries and to a spirit of ecumenism as a local church pastor.  He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Pacific School of Religion. He is also the author of The Bible You Didn’t Know You Could Believe In and his just-published book: The God You Didn’t Know You Could Believe In. Dr. Frantz and his wife, Yvette, are now retired and living in Florida.
